Foot and Ankle

Columbus Orthopaedics treats foot and ankle problems for patients in Columbus, Starkville and the Golden Triangle — sprained and broken ankles, Achilles tendon injuries, stress fractures, bunions and heel pain. Our orthopaedic surgeons start with nonsurgical care such as bracing, a walking boot, injections, or physical therapy whenever that is the right fit. When surgery is needed, many foot and ankle procedures can be done at our outpatient surgery center in Columbus.

Foot and ankle appointments are available at our Columbus clinic and Starkville clinic, with physical therapy in Columbus and at Starkville physical therapy.

Every step we take relies on the complex bones, ligaments, and tendons of the foot and ankle. Any ankle injury or foot pain impacts almost everything you do. Foot and ankle pain can be caused by anything from tripping over a step to a more severe injury, such as rolling your ankle during athletic play or a run. No matter how complex or complex your ankle injury or foot condition, foot pain and ankle pain can severely limit your ability to play and work.

Our dedicated Orthopedic Doctors, Sports Medicine Doctors, and Foot and Ankle Specialists are experienced and knowledgeable in treating a range of conditions, including ankle sprains, broken ankles, Achilles tendon ruptures, broken foot bones, and torn ligaments resulting from sports injuries or everyday accidents. We offer patients conservative, nonsurgical care whenever possible and, when required, foot or ankle surgery.

If you have had foot or ankle pain for years, we can help with bunions, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, and more. With injections, physical therapy, or bracing, we can help you get back to the activities you enjoy.

Common questions about foot and ankle care

You often can’t tell by looking. An X-ray is usually a good idea if you cannot take four steps on the foot, if there is tenderness right on the bony knobs of the ankle or along the outer edge of the foot, or if the foot looks out of shape. Swelling and bruising happen with both sprains and breaks.

Not always. Some Achilles ruptures heal well with a boot and a structured rehab plan, and others do better with surgical repair. The choice depends on your age, activity level, and the details of the tear. A sudden pop or the feeling of being kicked in the back of the heel should be checked soon.

Plantar fasciitis, the most common cause of heel pain, usually gets better over several months with stretching, supportive shoes, activity changes, and sometimes an injection or night splint. Very few people need surgery. See us if the pain lasts more than a few weeks or keeps you from walking comfortably.

Both treat foot and ankle problems. Our orthopaedic surgeons treat injuries and conditions of the whole leg, so they can also look at related knee, hip, or back problems and handle fractures that need surgery.
